Updated: Maine’s Minimum Wage Guidelines
Maine's minimum wage increases from $15.10 to $15.70 per hour on January 1, 2027, the tipped wage rises from $7.55 to $7.85, and the salary threshold for overtime exemption goes to $905.79 per week or $47,101.08 per year. Specific figures for Portland and Rockland may be coming soon. The Maine Department of Labor announced the change on September 18, 2026, driven by a 4.1% rise in the Northeast CPI-W between August 2025 and August 2026.
Maine adjusts these figures every year under a 2016 voter referendum, and they always take effect January 1. Here is what changes, what it means for your payroll, and the numbers from prior years for reference.
Key Takeaways from this Article
- Maine's minimum wage is $15.70 per hour effective January 1, 2027, up 60 cents from $15.10.
- The service employee tipped wage rises to $7.85, and the monthly tip threshold to qualify as a service employee goes from $191 to $199.
- The state salary threshold for overtime exemption becomes $905.79 per week, or $47,101.08 per year.
- The new rate applies to hours worked on or after January 1, so a pay period spanning the new year has to be split.
- Portland and Rockland set their own higher rates and have not announced 2027 figures yet.
What is Maine's Minimum Wage in 2027?
Effective January 1, 2027, Maine's minimum wage is $15.70 per hour, up from $15.10. The increase comes from the annual cost-of-living adjustment required under Maine statute Title 26, chapter 7, section 664, which ties the wage to the Northeast region CPI-W. That index rose 4.1% between August 2025 and August 2026.
The state minimum applies to agricultural workers as well, following a 2025 law extending coverage to farm workers.
According to Bureau of Labor Statistics Current Population Survey data for 2025, roughly 28,000 Maine workers were paid less than $15.00 per hour. That is about 4% of all wage and salary workers, and about 8% of those paid hourly.
What is the Tipped Wage in Maine for 2027?
The service employee minimum wage, commonly called the tip wage, increases to $7.85 per hour on January 1, 2027, up from $7.55.
That $7.85 is a direct cash wage you pay. It is not the whole obligation. At the end of each week you have to be able to demonstrate that the employee's direct wage plus their tips reached at least $15.70 per hour for every hour worked. If it did not, you make up the difference.
The monthly tip threshold to qualify someone as a service employee in the first place rises from $191 to $199. An employee who does not regularly receive more than $199 a month in tips cannot be paid the tipped wage at all. If you operate a tip pool, Maine's tip pooling rules apply on top of this.
What is the Salary Threshold for Exempt Employees in 2027?
Starting January 1, 2027, the minimum salary for a Maine employee to be exempt from overtime is $905.79 per week, or $47,101.08 per year.
Maine sets this at 3,000 times the state minimum wage, or the federal annualized rate, whichever is higher. Because Maine's minimum wage is well above the federal floor, the state figure governs here.
Salary alone does not make someone exempt. The employee's actual duties still have to satisfy the executive, administrative, or professional test. Someone can earn well above $47,101.08 and still be owed overtime if their duties do not qualify. This is the part that shows up in wage claims, because paying a salary is easy and documenting duties is not.

When Does Maine's Minimum Wage Increase?
Every January 1. Under the 2016 referendum, the adjustment is automatic and indexed to inflation, so there is no legislative action to watch for and no year in which it simply does not happen. The Department of Labor typically announces the following year's figures in September, once August CPI-W data is available.
The detail that catches employers is the boundary. The new rate applies to hours worked on or after January 1, not to the pay date. If your pay period runs from late December into early January, the December hours are paid at the old rate and the January hours at the new one on the same check.
How Should Employers Prepare?
Five things, and the first two should happen before your first January payroll.
- Update the rate in your payroll system for every employee currently below $15.70, and check your tipped employees are set to $7.85.
- Audit your exempt salaries. Anyone between $871.16 and $905.79 per week falls below the new threshold on January 1 and either needs a raise or needs to be reclassified as non-exempt.
- Check compression. Raising your floor without adjusting the people just above it is how you end up with a two-year employee earning the same as a new hire.
- Order the updated labor law poster. The Department of Labor publishes it free at maine.gov/labor/posters.
- Confirm your Portland and Rockland rates separately once those cities publish, if you have employees working within either city.

-
$15.70 per hour, effective January 1, 2027. That is a 60 cent increase from the 2026 rate of $15.10, reflecting a 4.1% rise in the Northeast CPI-W between August 2025 and August 2026.
-
January 1, 2027. Maine's minimum wage adjusts for inflation automatically every year and always takes effect on January 1. The rate applies to hours worked on or after that date rather than to the pay date, so a pay period that spans the new year has to be split between the old and new rates.
-
The direct cash wage rises to $7.85 per hour in 2027. Employers must still ensure that wages plus tips reach at least $15.70 per hour for the workweek, and make up any shortfall. The monthly tip threshold to qualify as a service employee increases from $191 to $199.
-
$905.79 per week, or $47,101.08 per year, starting January 1, 2027. Maine sets this at 3,000 times the state minimum wage, or the federal rate if that is higher. Meeting the salary figure is only one requirement; the employee's duties must also satisfy the executive, administrative, or professional test before the exemption applies.
-
Yes. Agricultural workers are covered by the state minimum wage following a 2025 law extending those protections to farm workers, so the $15.70 rate applies to them from January 1, 2027.
-
Both cities set their own rates above the state minimum and announce them separately, usually later in the year. Their 2027 figures have not been published as of this update. For 2026 the rates were $16.75 in Portland and $16.00 in Rockland. If you have employees performing work inside either city, confirm the local rate before January.
How Can Paper Trails Help?
The wage change itself is a one-line edit. What takes the time is everything around it: finding the exempt employees who slipped below the new threshold, splitting the pay period that straddles January 1, resetting tipped employees, and deciding what to do about the people just above minimum who now make the same as a new hire.
At Paper Trails, we handle the January rate change for our clients as part of payroll and tax services, and we flag the exempt salary audit before it becomes a reclassification problem. Our team is in Kennebunk. You can read the full announcement on the Maine Department of Labor website.
